The Pretty Mean Superglide Express Nitro Pro-Fuel bike ridden by Kristine Becker
CHASSIS
The 86" wheel base frame has been through many modifications. The winter of 1998-99 we cut the top of the frame off and re-did it in a three rail set up with extra clearance for a new, tall deck, long rod motor. We use 4130 chrome moly alloy tubing, 1" outside diameter and .065" thick wall. Heli-arc welded and gusseted for the strongest possible construction. A few extra braces were added and the frame was ready to go.
The motor plates were modified with help of Liberty Machine (Steve Heidner). We had been running a Sportster based set up and changed to a big twin type motor, This entailed major surgery. The whole mess took two months and came out really fine and strong. Steve always fine tunes my ideas and the new setup is proving itself.
The rear wheel was retained but we switched to a larger tire. The old tire was 10" wide and 26" tall. The new tire is 10.5" wide and 28" tall. The theory is that a taller tire "stands up" more at top speed and gives the effect of a higher top gear. The Goodyear tech guy laughed at this as all tires grow about 3 % . It is accepted thought though. The main thing we do is use a Micky Thompson brand tire, while every body else except NHIRA pro-stock bike uses Goodyear’s. We have had good luck so far, will keep all you all posted.
The front triple trees were replaced wit some custom made aluminum ones. The old ones were steel and heavy.
MOTOR
The new power plant is based on a harley big-twin. The S&S crankshaft uses 8 inch long 4340 chrome moly connecting rods, The stroke is 5.25 inches. The bore is a 313/16" with a good overbore. It uses a single cam made by Jim Leinweber, We use Sifton cam followers. The heads are from S&S and are Special Application Model B-1 heads. We ported them to optimize flow to match the cam used.
The fuel system uses a modified Waterman Blue pump with a 2-7/16 inch Kinsler Billet Injector flowed through Hilborn Jet cans and poppet valves. We use a cable controlled shut down, believing it is safer than a complicated air system shut down. The system is capable of pumping more than 1 gallon of nitromethane to the motor in less than 5 seconds.
CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION
There is no transmission. The bike is a one speed or as we like to say "Low gear only"’ The other teams call it "High gear only". We like to think we go over 170 in low gear. When you only have one speed , you can pick what to call it.
The clutch is an infinitely adjustable "slipper" clutch. It works on centrifugal force. That means the faster it spins the more it transfers power.
